Driving Simulator Run
The Fixed Base Driving Simulator at Dynamic Research Inc. (DRI), in Torrance, California was used to study the behavior of drivers as they "drove" through a stretch of simulated highway with a Mergex system. The simulator offers a 150 degree field of view from a full size instrumented vehicle with side mirror capability. You can see a video of a driver's travel through the system in the window below. Of all the "naïve" subject drivers that participated in the trial 72% were able to negotiate the system without any problems in the first circuit. The remaining drivers "learned" their way through the system in the subsequent repeat circuits. A detailed post-drive questionnaire was used to assess the drivers' experience.
